Col du Galibier – Ramp to the north

Col du Galibier – Ramp to the north

The Col du Galibier is part of the Route des Grandes Alpes and is one of the classics in the French Alps. It is the fifth-highest pass in the Alps. This picture shows the view to the north, the descent down to Valloire. The highest point of the route is at 2642 metres, but is not permitted for all vehicle classes. A few metres below the top of the pass, however, there is a tunnel as an alternative for larger and heavier vehicles. The northern ramp is well tarmaced, with a wide road layout and generous curves. In other words, plenty of riding fun for every motorcyclist. As part of the Alpine Marathon 2022, a team from SnapShortFilm accompanied a tour group from Harry's Bike Tours on the 7-day tour,…

Col de Vars – fun on the curves towards the Cote d’Azur

Col de Vars – fun on the curves towards the Cote d’Azur

The summit of the Col de Vars lies at an altitude of 2108 metres. It is part of the Route des Grandes Alpes and is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, right on the border between the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments. If you like things typically "French", this is the place for you. The country, people and cuisine are simple and good. The route is winding, but the roads are wide and sweeping. If you look closely at the picture, you can see how the road winds its way southwards down the valley. As part of the Alpine Marathon 2022, a team from SnapShortFilm travelled the tour with Harry's Bike Tours and filmed many interesting moments and situations. 50 passes in a two-parter on television. Plus lots of information and…

Col de Vars – the border pass between the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments

Day 6 of the Alpine Marathon 2022 - in 7 days through 6 countries over 50 passes - brings the team from SnapShortFilm and Harry's Bike Tours ever closer to the Cote d'Azur. The pass marks about half of the day's route of a good 300 kilometres. Ideal, as the restaurant with its small, typically French menu is highly recommended. However, you should be patient. The couple who run the restaurant are certainly long past their "golden wedding anniversary". The road up to the pass, coming from the Col de l'Izoard, is wide and easy to drive on. The bends are sweeping and a lot of fun to ride. The SnapShortFilm team accompanied Harry's Bike Tours and some selected participants for the TV report "The Alpine Marathon" and captured many…

Fort Victor Emanuel – the fort between Col de l’Iseran and Col de Télégraphe

The Route des Grandes Alpes was the centrepiece of the Alpine Marathon 2022. On our tour, which took us through 6 countries over 50 passes in 7 days, we drove past this impressively situated fort on day 5. Originally one of five fortresses built in 1818 to defend the Kingdom of Sardinia, which also included the Duchy of Savoy. It is situated at an altitude of 1350 metres and can only be reached from the main road via a narrow bridge deep down in the gorge. The entire Alpine Marathon 2022 was as impressive as the location of the fort and its alpine surroundings, with one highlight following the next and the landscape changing significantly from day to day. In just seven days, an impressive overall impression of the European…

The Oberalp Pass – High Alps with railway romance. The Alpine Marathon at its best.

The Oberalp Pass – High Alps with railway romance. The Alpine Marathon at its best.

On the third day of our 2022 Alpine Marathon tour - over 50 passes in 7 days through 6 countries - we were travelling through central Switzerland. Here, the pass routes are more extensive and the passes are further apart. In 350 kilometres of touring, we only managed to cross 5 Alpine passes. One of them, the Oberalp Pass, is already well above the tree line at 2046 metres. We started the ascent from Disentis/Muster - coming from the north-east, heading south-west. The descent then ends in Andermatt. The ascent offers a fantastic panorama of the high Alps with few spectacular bends or hairpin bends. Ideal for the cruiser among you. The descent, on the other hand, offers some serpentine-like passages. It is always fascinating to see how the railway…

The Flüela Pass – Swiss German for “rocky area”…

On day three of the Alpine Marathon 2022, we covered a lot of kilometres but only crossed five passes. In this part of the Alps, the terrain is vast and the passes are a little further apart. One of them, Pass 1 for the day: the Flüela Pass. It lies between the village of Susch in the east and the world-famous Davos in the west. We travelled it as part of our "7|6|50" tour - over 50 passes in seven days through 6 Alpine countries. The Flüela Pass is extremely varied. The lower section is serpentine, while the upper section takes you through a wide and sweeping, very rocky high valley. This also gives the pass its name. The Swiss-German word "Flueh" means "a rocky area". This picture shows the…

Lake Predil – green and cold water between Passo Nevea and the Predil Pass

Lake Predil – green and cold water between Passo Nevea and the Predil Pass

As you cross the Predil Pass towards Italy, Lake Predil immediately impresses with its deep green colour. As inviting as it is for swimming on hot days during motorbike tours, it is cold. Nevertheless, there are car parks and bathing facilities on the west side. If you continue along the western shore, you come out at the foot of Passo Nevea. Here too - as with the Predil Pass - the western ramp is the more interesting stretch. As part of the TV series "Alpine Marathon", the SnapShortFilm team produced a reportage in the border triangle, which also includes reports on the Predil Pass, Predilsee and Passo Nevea. Further reports from the "Alpine Marathon" series are available "on demand" at motomovie.de or at motorvision.tv.

The Predil Pass – beautiful location and fantastic views.

The Predil Pass is part of every tour that takes place in the border triangle of Italy, Slovenia and Austria. As part of the Alpine Marathon, we - the team from SnapShortFilm, commissioned by motomovie.de - have already ridden the pass towards Lake Predil (Italy) several times. And sometimes back again to film. The Predil Pass is not one of the more spectacular passes, but its views and history are much more fascinating. There are several positions, forts and a bunker on both sides of the pass, demonstrating the strategic importance of the Predil Pass. The route on the western side is quite winding, the roads are wide and the tarmac is excellent. Heading west, the route continues over the Passo Nevea, past Lake Predil or onto the Nassfeld Pass.…

Ascent to the Col des Saisies – the start of the Route des Grandes Alpes

The Col des Saisies is one of the moderate passes on the Route des Grandes Alpes. It lies between the villages of Flumet and Beaufort. The rest of the route then leads to the Col de Méraillet and then on to the Cormet de Roselend. The summit is at 1650 metres and the maximum gradient is around 12 percent. This photo was taken in the lower section, just after the village of Flumet, and shows the most winding part of the entire route. As part of the Alpine Marathon 2022, the SnapShortFilm and Harry's Bike Tours team rode this Alpine pass on day 5. This day's route began in Annecy and ended after the Col de Télégraphe in the ski resort of Valloire. The Alpine Marathon 2022 was accompanied by…

Flumet – Middle Age village between the Col des Aravis and the Col des Saisies.

Flumet is a small, picturesque village in the Mont Blanc region. It lies on the Route des Grandes Alpes between the Col des Aravis and Col des Saisies Alpine passes. The silhouette of the village is famous for its medieval arched bridge over the river Arly. As part of the Alpine Marathon 2022 - 7|6|50 (in 7 days through 6 countries over 50 passes) - we cycled here on day 5. We started this day in Annecy. The rest of the route then took us into the French Alps via the Col de l'Iseran. Even though the two passes that border the valley around Flumet are not particularly high (around 1500 metres), the routes are still very attractive and, above all, winding. Videos of other Alpine passes here on motomovie.de.…
